InactiveAll,
I just had this idea today after reading Andy’s message about setting up a new regular night to play VDP. I would love it if we somehow had an online client to see when our “buddies” get online and we could invite them to play a pickup game of VDP, or if we missed an invite or notice on this website we might still see 4 “buddies” are playing when we check our email.
The best free tool I know of for this is Steam – http://www.steampowered.com
The client is free and I will setup a VDP gaming group. We should be able to “Add an external game” to Steam. This means that we let Steam know what VDP is by pointing it to the game executable file. The steam client always runs on your machine and it shoots off little prompts in the lower right to let you know that a friend of yours just started playing game X – or that they just got online – or that they are inactive (away from keyboard).
I use this to play counterstrike with friends several nights a week and without it we would never do that. It is too big of a pain to call or text someone periodically to see if they have time to play.
Imagine sitting down at your pc and you notice that Andy, Dan, John, and Mike are all “Online” – well you could send a quick VDP invite to all of them and if they can play at that moment then game on.
I will create a group on Steam tonight and I hope a bunch of you guys are willing to try this. Steam really is a great tool and I do not find it annoying (I think IM clients like Yahoo Messenger, or AIM are a pain in the rear.) This client is gaming group oriented so let’s give it a shot! :silly:
By the way I am [RG]Orion on Steam
Dan
…UPDATE…
Group created:
Name: Virtual Dawn Patrol
Abbrev: VDP
URL: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/virtualdawnpatrolGroup is currently set to public – we will see if that becomes a problem or not.

MemberI just got on Steam, too, as “Eris_Lobo”!
When I checked for games to connect to my account, however, I didn’t see Virtual Dawn Patrol listed … is that set up yet?
FYI, Eris is the Greek goddess of Chaos — and Lobo is Spanish for Wolf — so, yeah, Chaos Wolf is me … i.e., Coyote, the trickster spirit … but that’s a looong story … *chuckles and swishes her bushy tail*

InactiveGetting Steam to show that VDP is running will be a challenge because it involves registering an executable. The Vassal engine is not your typical windows executable as it runs via Java – so in short.. I will get back to you on this one
