InactiveI have been wondering what other games DP players might regularly play, online or face to face is fine too. DP has such a broad appeal that I am sure our answers would vary greatly. My hope is this thread might reveal that some of you play games that other DP players also take part in.
I somewhat regularly play:
Tradewars 2002 – http://eisonline.com and http://classictw.com – (old bbs game now in a windows version – still fun!)
World War II Online Battleground Europe – http://wwiionline.com (great flying and better than average sea and ground war simulation)
CounterStrike Source (half life 2 engine on Steam – http://steampowered.com )So, what about the rest of you?

InactiveI should add that if any of you want to try out any of the games I listed, I would be happy to help show you the ropes and get you more quickly acclimated to any of them.

MemberFor face-to-face gaming, I play most Sundays with a group of friends. About half the time we play a swords & sorcery RPG campaign using the Rolemaster system and the rest of the time is an assortment of diverse boardgames – games that have been popular lately include Twilight Imperium, Arkham Horror, various editions of Risk, Settlers of Catan, Talisman, Empire Builder. Dawn Patrol has never caught on with this group, but fortunately I have Vassal for that fix.
Computer gaming tends to be a winter hobby for me. I tend to gravitate towards the grand civ/strategy games like Hearts of Iron, Crown of Glory, Europa Universalis, Galactic Civilization, or the Total War series. But I’ve been watching the development of the Over Flanders Fields add-on for Microsoft’s Combat Flight Simulator and it looks so good I’ve decided that it will be my winter gaming distraction if it comes out in time.

ParticipantOur MN group has been playing a lot of ‘Power Grid’ and Agricola’ board games when we do not have a foursome. Both are great games!
Dan, I would be interested in the WWII online, can I get away w/ an older machine to play it on or do i need the latest & greatest graphic card to run it?
Kev, I have also seen screenshots for OFF, and if they do release that I may have to go for it. I used to play Red Baron II quite a bit so like the flight sims…
speaking of which, anyone else ever play that one? I think there was a multiplayer/online option for the game that i never tried… could be interesting!October 6, 2008 at 11:22 pm #6968Anonymous

I think there was a multiplayer/online option for the game that i never tried… could be interesting!WWIIOnline was originally released in 2001, so your machine will likely run it fine. There have been graphics patches since then, but still it is much lighter on those requirements. They have a standard 14-day free trial for newcomers. I will see if I can “invite” you for one. There will be a bit of a learning curve but if you have played red baron II, then you can figure it out.
As for red baron II, it is ironic to see this as I just came across my cd for it as I was looking for something else. We should try multiplayer soon!

ParticipantIs a joystick required for the WWII game? If so, I am out of luck.
But RBII – would be game for that for sure!! If anyone else is interested, I believe you can download the game for free now… the instructions are out in the forum on the http://www.theaerodrome.com website under games somewhere…

MemberMost of my gaming time these days revolves around a series of games by Avalanche Press called Panzer Grenadier:
http://www.avalanchepress.com/line_Panzer.phpIt’s a wonderful system that combines fairly simple rules, colorful boards/counters, playability, and historical accuracy. In my mind it’s greatest benefit is that it’s a great solitaire game. There probably hasn’t been two consecutive days in the past year when I haven’t had one of the Panzer Grenadier games set up on my gaming table.
I hate to say it, but it allows me to play a great wargame when I want to as opposed to Dawn Patrol which requires four or more players for an “official” game. I really enjoy Dawn Patrol however the fact it requires four people plus the fact it’s not a good solo game makes it darned near impossible to enjoy on a regular basis. I’ve tried my darnedest on numerous occasions to become part of the Dawn Patrol community (and the fact I’m posting this means I’m still very interested), but if you’re not a person that lives near Indy or one of the other couple DP hotbeds, it’s practically impossible to regularly play the game.

MemberI play many games, at one time I owned my own game store…..
Some favorites I like (but lack a group to play with);
All the RISK’s, all the Axis and Allies… even the new minature table top version, FRAG, Napolean in Europe, The World at War, Twilight Emperium, Starcraft the boardgame… I own over 50 board games (had more than a 100 but sold them off on ebay, WHAT A MISTAKE THAT WAS!)
For Online fun and get my FIX in on gaming;
EVE-ONLINE, EQ2, Battlefield 1942 (wish they would do a WWI skin), I love all the Total war series (but my comp doesn’t), Europa (lost the copy), Starcraft online and so many more I dont want to bore you all again.
Anyway, nice to know you all!

InactiveWelcome GenHawk – just want to suggest that you checkout Rise Of Flight for the PC if you haven’t already. If you buy it, I am looking for players to go up against or fly co-op with.

MemberI still play some Legend of the Five Rings CCG, but my primary interest is DP. I will try to get some other players to the Game Dy in Illinois on 11/20 to grow the game.
Andrew, has Mark pulled out the Dominion Game up there in Minney? Its a good game in that it is based on deck construction (probably appealing to CCG players), but the deck construction is on the fly/in game. I don’t know any gamers around here that have tried that game and do not like it.
A lot of my friends are game collectors so I have been trying many new games that they buy as they are released. Arcana, Tomb, Thunderstone, are a few of the more recent ones. But Dominion is far and away the most popular one of late.

MemberI will check it out next time I am at FRY’s Electronics…. how old is the game?

InactiveYou might be able to find it there, but I had to order it from Amazon – it has been out for a year or so and is still receiving updates and improvements from the developers. It is a Russian studio of WW1 aviation enthusiasts that created the game.

MemberDan! You’re playing WWII online? !S I do trust you’re an Axis officer? I certainly don’t want to see you on my kill list LOL.
Anyways as far as board gaming and the like; I’ve started a gaming club here where I live. To get people hooked I started with Talisman. That’s a great game to introduce people into rolling dice, isn’t it?
We’ll be moving on to Dawn Patrol as soon as tomorrow. I’ve bought things to build a map out of sections of foam board so I’ll be doing that tonight.Has anyone here experimented with using hex’s instead of squares for you maps? I was thinking it might be worth looking into.
