I might be willing and able to give online games a go. However, I have no idea how this works, what software I need, where to get it, etc.. Can anyone point me in the right direction? And I am absolutely not a tech expert …

Yes Graham, I would be happy to help you load what you need to and join us online.
First: Go to vassalengine.org and download the latest version of this software. The procedure is typical of a windows download, go to your downloads folder to find vassal and run/install it. If you have problems PM me your contact info and I can walk you through it.
Second: Come back to this site and go to the Downloads tab above and under Virtual Dawn Patrol, load the VDP 1.2 Module for Vassal. This also will probably go to your downloads folder.
Third: Run the Vassal program. The first time you do it will ask to load a module. Search in your downloads folder for the VDP1.2 module. It should have a movie clip icon. After you load that module, you will be asked to Load a program, Create a new program, or Look for an online game. You look for us, and Vassal does all the leg work. You do not need IP or server addresses, etc.
A server window will open and show that you are in the Main Room for Dawn Patrol. If anyone is online we will see you and lead you over to the Game Board area (or just double click on Game Board in the server window). But people can chat with you in the Controls window, so keep your eyes on that box if you see anybody else online.
We are playing tonight from 6:45 til about 11:00 (Central time). Mondays seems to be forming into our main game night, though we have also got together on Sunday nights as well.
