MemberHello Folks,
For what it is worth, I’m considering the possiblity of reacqainting myself with Dawn Patrol to the extent of possibly moderating a game via email. That being the case, what might be a good idea is to have someone who has moderated email Dawn Patrol games do a write up on their experiences and what is or can be involved in moderating a game via email.Questions that come to mind off the bat so to speak:
What is an effective good upper limit to the number of participants?
What level of “double blind” is prudent for the game?
Has anyone used pre-generated die rolls in advance? By pre-generated, I mean for example, that I pregenerate 1,000 die rolls, mail the file to a disinterested third party or store the file here on the server. Then, as players take their actions, use the next available pre-generated number. For a double blind system, once the game is done, a debriefing can be held for all interested parties, and then see the Moderator’s log of how things went down from start to finish. Such a system would be good both for the players who participated, and the Moderator so that both he and the players can determine where (if anywhere) the rules were not adhered to properly and permit the moderator a chance to learn from his mistakes. The other benefit is, such a “log” by the Moderator can be uploaded to the server as an example game, or even a library of games so that any new comers who show up after 8th edition is published – can have something to learn on.
I’m sure there are questions that I haven’t asked that people can toss my way in this thread. If that should be the case – go for it!

I would LOVE to see people be able to utilize a double blind set up, and have a lot of fun playing. I figure that if I want to have fun as a player, I’d also be better advised to do my fair share of Moderating too.
Thoughts? Comments?

ParticipantHal,
I am currently moderating an e-game, and can tell you how we are currently running it.
We play full ‘double blind’ so only the moderator and each player knows what is happening to their aircraft (unless its public such as smoke or automatically moving first, all table announcements are communicated) and it seems to work quite well.
I am running a 5 vs 5 game right now, and w/o the task of using pre-generated rolls it can still take me 1/2-1 hour to resolve a turns firing phase. Having to match numbers sounds cumbersome. I think a better solution for a moderator would be to just create a logfile every turn for rolls, that way they can go back & reference that if need be.
I think 10 players would be the max you would want in one game, but it really bogs down. I would recommend 4-6 player games max. We also have instituted a ’48 hr’ rule so each player only has 2 days to complete his move- it keeps the game moving faster.
I would highly recommend playing a few egames before attempting to moderate one. I think it is imperative that the moderator knows and understands the rules before taking on the task of running a game… my 2 cents
at some point I will would like to do a ‘moderator instruction guide’… add it to the list
