I recently discovered a new trick to help remove some of the clutter and confusion when playing the live game. Follow these instructions, maybe even print this and keep it handy when you log on: Open Vassal first of course…

    1) Double-click on the Module in the left hand column of the Vassal Main window (currently the only window open for Vassal.

    2) In the now open Welcome window, select Look for a Game Online, then press FINISH. The Welcome Window disappears and two windows open, a Server window and a Controls window.

    3) In the Server window, right-click on the word Board in the left column and select Join Room. Now right-click on the first person’s name in the right column, and select Synchronize.

    4) (***Here is the new trick***) Go to the Controls Window and hit the double arrow button (to the right of the STEP button). The Server window will disappear. As long as you are synchronized to the main player you should never need this server window again.

    5) Go back to the Vassal Main window and repeat steps one and two above. First drag the only server window visible on your screen to the lower left of your screen. Then take the newer Controls window and set it just below the primary Controls window, which is already set to board. Be prepared to right click in the server window to join either the Allied or the German team window as instructed. There is no need to synchronize this secondary server.

That’s it! I attached a screen capture of what your screen should look like after you re-size your maps. I am on a tiny little netbook, so I know full well how chaotic the screen can become with all of the windows open.

*** Here is another trick for disconnects: Now keep in mind that if you ever get disconnected, your best bet is to go to the server that got disconnected and hit the double arrow button in the server box. Note that if your board server gets disconnected, you will have to hit the double arrow button in the Control window first in order to see your Server box again, then go into that Server Window and hit the double arrow button there to reconnect. The double arrow button in the server window is usually dimmed, until you are disconnected and then it goes visible for you to use to reconnect. When you reconnect, you restart in the Main room again so if your Board got disconnected do not forget to synchronize again. Also, you never need to synchronize the secondary window, and I recommend against it as it may be a cause of recent issues with quirks or disconnects with the Vassal program.***

I hope this is helpful to you all. Feel free to PM me with any other questions or comments. Cheers!
    Mark
