MemberWhile running our balloon busting game last Saturday, I ran into a few questions that I couldn’t find answers to in the rulebook. I made judgement calls for all of them, but was curious how you guys handled them:
[ol]
[li]Are balloons always encountered over the front, or can they be behind enemy lines? Seems odd that they would be far behind enemy lines.[/li]
[li]AA guns cannot fire when an allied plane is within 400′ of its target. Is this limit the same for Flaming Onions?[/li]
[li]Do you roll for criticals after each ground gun fires, or after they have ALL fired?[/li]
[li]Is there a limit to the altitude difference between two planes when firing? i.e. Can I be 100′ behind a plane, but 400′ above it and still fire? It seems to me like it should be a triangular relationship, <100' alt difference if you're 100' behing, or <200' alt difference if you're 200' behind, etc. But, I can't find the actual ruling for that anywhere in the book, except for the rules for tailing.[/li]
[/ol]
Thanks in advance for any help. I think that’s all the questions for now.December 20, 2008 at 3:06 am #7012Jim Phillips

[li]Are balloons always encountered over the front, or can they be behind enemy lines? Seems odd that they would be far behind enemy lines.[/li]If your asking if a friendly balloon would be behind enemy lines or if an enemy balloon would be behind your lines in your friendly territory the answer is no. If your asking would an enemy balloon be behind thier lines the answer is yes. I would be really surprised to find one out in no mans land. I believe you can see several miles from 800 ft in the air which would cover the front you were observing or allow you to be way away from the front.

Quote:[li]Do you roll for criticals after each ground gun fires, or after they have ALL fired?[/li]You roll criticals after all indirect fire ground guns fire (AA,Onions, Heavy AA, Guys with rifles or ground fire)which fire before planes.
And after players/planes fire there is direct fire (Machine Guns)That makes a total of twice a turn.Quote:[li]Is there a limit to the altitude difference between two planes when firing? i.e. Can I be 100′ behind a plane, but 400′ above it and still fire? So 100 ft behind and 350 Ft above would put you at 450ft total.

To make it perfectly clear, balloons are always behind their own lines at a distance of 1d6 x 9 squaares.

Note that the 400′ limit is for light AA and Flaming Onion. HEavy AA is larger (I don’t remember how much) and mg’s are 200′.

MemberThanks for all the responses, guys, they are all very helpful.
One thing to clarify though:

So 100 ft behind and 350 ft above would put you at 450 ft total.I wasn’t asking how to calculate the distance, I was wondering if you could actually target someone while you’re in that position. Your response seems to indicate that you can though. I would think that you’d almost have to be nose down to target someone 350 ft. below you if you’re only one square away from them.

ParticipantAhhh my misunderstanding.
Yes you can target them!!

Hmmm ok thats on page 24. I also noticed that if a balloon is surprised the MG’s still get to fire. I never knew that.
In the last couple of years I have made a real effort to learn and adopt the rules and traditions of the way you midwest guys fly. I can honestly saw that I have begun to wonder what game I started playing in ’98 because alot of this stuff we’ve never had right.

ParticipantYeah us ‘MN Heretics’ have recently decided that we need to ‘fly by the book’ as well. We had a long discussion about other games we play, and how we never question the rules, so have gone back to normal tailing & tend to reference the rulebook more too.
I’ll have to say that we dont play that MGs fire on a surprise either though…January 8, 2009 at 2:22 am #7013Jim Phillips
ParticipantI’m actually wondering if any of us play that MGs don’t get surprised. I’ve played balloon games with Mike and the subject never came up. Though I do not recall if the balloon was surprised.
George? Al? Care to comment?
