NOTES: Flieger is a Private. Pioneer is a Private in the Bavarian air service. Gefreiter is a PFC. In German two-seaters the Observer is the officer in command and the pilot is the NCO chaffeur. However in the Schlachtstaffels (CL class) they didn’t have an Observer. Instead they had a gunner who was also an NCO. The Sergeant and Feldwebel ranks appear only in this position.

RNAS two-seaters and flying boats frequently have Warrant Officers as observer/gunners.

Here’s the updated and completed German naval ranks.

(1) These four ranks have two titles. When you enter naval aviation you begin as a Flugzeugmaat. After you receive your pilot/observer/gunners badge (in D.P. terms roughly 3-6 missions) you become a Flugmaat. In other words the titles with flugzeug are general aviation ranks, suitable for riggers, fitters, squadron clerks, etc. The ranks titles with only flug are qualified aviators.
(2) A Vizeflugmeister is an enlisted/NCO who has been selected for promotion to officer status. Since we can’t have such lowly people as full officers they are always promoted to reserve officers, hence the d.R.
(3) a Fahnrich is a direct entry officer candidate, a midshipman if you will.
(4) The suffix z.S. is a naval qualification given only to officers and Fahnrich.

In addition to the naval personnel there were naval infantry and artillery personnel on the western front. Their ranks from Gefreiter to Hauptmann match the ranks for the airforce already given except they have a suffix of d.M.I. or d.M.A. for der Matrosen Infantry or der MAtrosen Artillery. The one new rank is
Soldat – Private.
