    Hey guys,

Had posted this this question in relation to ongoing thread in “Who are You?…” Forum, but looking for advice and reposting here:

How do you handle cloudbanks in your games  ? In particular, how do you discourage, other than points loss, players from ‘escaping’ into cloud? I had cooked up an intro recon/fighter intercept scenario for gamenite, and the guys (and girl) seemed to enjoy it, but it was blindsided (IMO) by the ability of the Brits to hustle their R.E. 8s out of trouble by hiding in one of the cloudbanks. I had randomly generated all the particulars, and it ran well when i gave it a couple quick ‘playtests,’ but this stumped me in actual play, as I hadn’t seen it coming…

Is it just the reality of that era? I would rather keep a ‘mechanic’ that I don’t fully understand or enjoy, rather than fudge things by disregarding or changing generated scenarios…If it’s a viable tactic, in your opinion, then I will live with it, but it seemed to cut an otherwise enjoyable session short. :(

    Thx,
    Zen

    Zen,
The cloud banks are one of the many variables in the game that keep in interesting and can be both a tactical advantage and disadvantage. They are infact, and easy way to escape the combat, particularly for planes like the RE8 that rarely can escape on their own!

IMHO, clouds can really muck up a scenario. We don’t roll for clouds very often in Kalamazoo. Mike Carr still chuckles at the ‘blue skies over the Kalamazoo front’ . After all, when you can get together once a month(if that)who wants to waste their time with aircraft ducking in and out of clouds. The Freikorps response to “cloud ducking” is to fly away and start another game. Three cloud games on a wednesday night is not very much fun (yes,we know it’s realistic to have clouds. It’s also realistic to make a takeoff roll before every game starts too. Not much fun tho’ if you crash…)

Another thing I should mention …The Freikorps allows tailing only from directly behind an enemy a/c. So, the weaker a/c in the game have a better chance of breaking a tail, especially when you put in the ‘no move over ‘ rule. So we don’t need clouds as much .

Evidently the scenario didn’t go as poorly as i seem to remember; two of the players have independently mentioned throwing a ‘flying game’ on one of our game nights…i think i was just disappointed because i didn’t feel our game was as exciting as i remember my intro to Dawn Patrol was, way back when. Thkz for all the feedback.
