    Hi all –

I’m Alan Carlson. I returned to Minneapolis about a year ago, after getting my introduction to FITS in 1975 or so at the now-defunct Ye Olde Guarde wargaming club in south Minneapolis. (Same time & place I started D&D.) I started wargaming back in 1972, but sold much of my collection in the mid- to late 1980s (due to work pressures). Didn’t sell Dawn Patrol though, and picked up a near-mint copy of FITS a few months ago. Last Friday (October 25), I went to my weekly wargaming meet, the First Minnesota at my FLGS (the Source). Some of the new wargamers were wondering “What are those guys playing over there, why is the map so huge, and why are they having so much fun?” :) Well, it was the 2013 Twin Cities Dawn Patrol Minicon! With Mike Carr!

Wargaming in general is enjoyable, but not nearly so much as FITS! I joined the FITS Society there and then and took off into the blue. That night my wife was very amused to hear me rattling around the basement; even more amused to see me come upstairs a little after midnight, ancient pilot book in hand! Later that weekend I discovered some amazing stuff is still stuck in my head – like the fact that ff Schwarzlozes are often cowled and can’t be unjammed in flight.

I’ve downloaded the Vassal module, and hope to see many of you online and in person (I also have more time to start travelling to Cons, too).

Welcome back to the ranks, it was enjoyable flying with you, and hope to see you at other society events

    Hey Allen!

Sorry I was unable to make it up from Chicago to meet you in person, that was my first missed Minneapolis Mini-Conn in three years. :(

I am the resident “Vassal Guy,” and I look forward to seeing you online soon. We usually get together on Sunday and Monday nights around 7PM Central. Also, if you PM me your email, I can send you a link to the latest Dawn Patrol Module. You probably module number 1.2 from the Vassal website, we have 1.4 in use at the moment. This isn’t mandatory though, just suggested. And after the recent system hack to DawnPatrol.org (forcing us to the current .info), I am a little hesitant to post the link to that module publicly. But that’s just for system security on both ends.

Hope to see you online soon, and welcome back!

    Hi Alan,

It was great to fly with you during the FITS mini con. I think everyone had a great time. It was fun to read your blurb about digging out your information from the basement. I am sure your wife is as amused by this as my wife is with my exploits. It is all in good, clean fun.

I look forward to flying with you again live and online!

    Hi Mark,

I would love to give Dawn Patrol via Vassal a try. Can you point me in the right direction? I’ve never tried vassal before. Thanks.

Well Graham, let me say how wonderful your timing is! We are playtesting Dawn Patrol using Roll20.net instead of Vassal, and we are pretty much starting that up today! We have had some serious issues with connectivity using Vassal, server drops on I would say 1 time in 4 that we play. So if you want to give Dawn Patrol a try on Roll20.net you are more than welcome to join us. We still do the same hours as Vassal, 7PM Central on Sunday and Monday nights. I am already online, testing things and adding some goodies and such.

Perhaps the best part about Roll20.net, you do not need to instal any software! Its browser based, often called web-ware. All you need to do is follow the link below and fall down the rabbit hole. Hope to see you there!

Yes I see you already created an account on roll20, and are a part of the campaign, good job! All you have to do now is press the launch campaign link and you are golden.
