    AAR Monday 09/29/2014

Well good evening everyone, and welcome to another Monday night edition of VDP, also known as “Do I have a snowball’s chance in H$## of surviving another mission?!”

Game one took place in August of 1918. This late war scenario pitted Jeff M and Scott K as Allies flying the deadly Bristol 275’s going up against Carl F and Chris Ohal as Germans. It was a mix bag for the Germans with Carl flying his “sturdy” Alb DIII escorted by Ohal in a Pfalz DXII.

The Germans showed no mercy out of the shoot (pun intended) as they surprised the Allies in the opening round. Chris took the 50’ bottom on Jeff while Carl F took the 50’ bottom on Scott. Both Jeff and Scott’s observers decided it was in their best interest (not to mention a heck of a lot of fun!!!) to return fire with their observers, each taking a 150’ side shot on Carl and Chris. The Germans dished out their punishment with most of their shots spread out and causing little effect on the Allies. Scott’s obs scored 3 hits on Chris, but it would be Jeff that would be victorious in this “German” surprise attack. Jeff dealt a hefty blow to Carl, causing his Alb to smoke and cutting his performance significantly. The surprise attack did not boast well for the Germans, and Carl was already declaring his intention to escape.

Carl had good initiative in turns two through five and was able to make good his escape and landed his aircraft. BTW, this is the same pilot that was shot down on 09/22/2014 by Andy Priest and lived to tell about it. Now, all Allied eyes were focused on Chris who also enjoyed some good initiative until turn five. At this point, Chris declared to escape in an attempt to out fly his British counterparts.

Jeff had the closer distance advantage on Chris than Scott did, as Scott found himself pointed the wrong way in turn five. However, turn six decided it for the Allies. Chris moved first flying his max desperately trying to lose Jeff and Scott. Jeff moved next and was able to get underneath Chris for a 50’ bottom shot. Scott, flew in from a rather far distance in an attempt to help his wingman and win the battle for the Allies.

Well, help he did. Scott was able to get a 500’ tail shot on Chris. Chris snubbed his nose at this feeble attempt and made other bodily gestures that we cannot go into on this forum. Well, he isn’t called “Great Shot Scott” for nothing. Scott hit from 500’ for a total of one hit to Chris’s left wing. That is all that it took. Scott hit Chris’s cabane strut, which cut his climb by 50’, dive by 300’, and he was unable to do any loops or fancy maneuvers.

It looked grim for the gentle German giant. But, Chris beat out the Allies for initiative in turn 7 and bravely flew away to fight another day.

Chris was scoring this game, which was his fourth and final game for the Ace of Aces tournament. His score was witnessed by his wingman Carl F and submitted to Graham for final tallies.

There is no Sunday night report this week as both Germans and Allies took the night off to enjoy a much-needed evening of frivolity.

This is the last evening to score in the Ace of Aces competition. Graham will be processing and posting the final results of the competition. . I think we all know it is safe to say the Mr. Jim Barber will be crowned as this quarters “Ace of Aces”. Jim mentioned he would be available for parties and small training sessions for a nominal fee.

Game two of tonight’s festivities was a real barn burner. No really, it was a hot one. Just ask Jeff.

For the Allies it was Chris Ohal and Scott K in their bottle nosed Dolphins going up against Carl F and Jeff M in Fokker DR I’s.

In turn 1, the Allies lost the initiative and flew away to give the Germans long range side shots. Carl looped and hung back from the fray. Jeff flew in and attempted his insignificant 450’ side shot, and missed. We knew he would.

Turn two was the ‘crème da la crème’ of the game. Scott looped back for eight hoping to draw Jeff in and still allow his wingman to nose up for protection. Well, Jeff did just that and came in for the 50’ bottom on Scott. This allowed Chris to fly in for the 100’ foot bottom shot on Jeff. Jeff put six hits into Scott’s bottom, with three of those finding the engine compartment. Chris was able to max his firing power and pounded Jeff’s bottom for eight hits. Chris had 4 pilot chances on Jeff. He was unable to capitalize on those hits. But, he did cause a serious problem.

Chris hit Jeff’s fuel tank causing a leak and a FIRE!!. Jeff, who is not really fond of fire, tried frantically in the next three turns to put out the fire and save himself and his sticken aircraft. Well in turn three of extinguishing the fire, Jeff go “BOOM” and fell from sky. He go splat on ground with a ready made bonfire following him. I think the Germans had a quick eulogy for Jeff followed by beer and brats over the open fire.

Meanwhile, Carl was doing his best to cause some trouble for the Allies before letting this one hit the history books. Carl did fly in on turn three and took a 100’ side shot on Scott. He managed to put two more slugs in Scott’s engine for a total of five hits, causing great loss of speed and smoke. Scott’s top speed was cut to turn speed.

Turn four found Chris moving first, followed by Carl and then Scott. Carl did follow after Chris and got on his tail. Scott was able to take advantage of this situation and escape by diving away and escaping, never having fired one shot from his three, yes THREE guns. @#$%&^!!!!!! After he was done whining, Scott landed his smoking crate and limped away.
Meanwhile, Chris reversed Carl with a loop maneuver , and Carl dove away and was able to escape. As I said, neither side really came out of this one smelling like well worn Army boots! Huh?

Chris did get the kill on Jeff’s 2/0 pilot. A moment of silence, please.

If you find yourself with nothing to do on Sunday or Monday evenings, might I suggest taking a walk on the wild side and joining us at the virtual table. We start around 7ish, for all you west coast players. CYA!

I got to wondering about that “surprise” attack and how was it that observers should be able to shoot. So I got out the rule book. According to the rule book, observers can only shoot if they roll a 1 or 2 and are limited to a short burst. I know the quick start supercedes the determination of surprise, but I don’t think it repeals the rules for observer reaction,

Yes, observers need to make a roll to fire when surprised. QuickStart didn’t change that.

So my guess is that the first game would be void given this information. We did not roll for surprise.

I don’t think games are ever “void”. Mistakes happen and can’t be undone. We just move on.

If we could get the 2nd game “voided” that would be OK with me. Even though there was technically no violation. Never had any luck with the DR I, no idea why. I even openly cursed the plane roll. First time I have ever been shot down in flames when as woman wasn’t involved.
