ParticipantWell good evening and welcome to this week’s Monday night match up. With our Ace of Ace’s competition in full swing, you can bet the competition is fierce out there. Congratulations go out to Jim Barber on his stellar performance in Sunday night’s game. Read all about it right here on your favorite forum. I was there and it was phenomenal.
Game one teamed up Ken S (Alb DV) and Scott K (Fokker DR I) against Andy P and Kevan S in Belgian Camels in April of 1918. In turn one, Scott immediately jammed his right gun and spent the rest of the game dealing damage with only one gun. Who needs two guns when you’re in a DR? It may have ended the game sooner. Anyway, Scott managed to get off 11 hits (two on Kevan and nine on AP). Of those nine hits, one found Andy’s interrupter gear, which in turn interrupted Andy’s game. He subsequently rolled a one and shot off his own prop, giving Scott the kill. Andy’s pilot survived his glide to landing so it was a good outcome for both sides.
Ken S was the victim of an onslaught of hits fired at him from the Allies. Poor initiative rolls set him up for a pummeling. But, Ken, being the tough and sturdy Alb that he was managed to remain flying, avoiding any really nasty crits and made good his escape into the clouds. Ken took a total of 33 hits! (I hope I remembered that correctly). Nice flying Ken!! After Andy was shot down, Kevan did not stick around and the game broke up after seven turns.
Game two was a different scenario. Still on the Western front, this game saw the early side of the war. It was January of 1917. Most of the planes flown were one gun wonders. Except for Ken S. He rolled up and Alb DII so he was the life of the party with two guns. His wing man Kevan, flew in a Halberstadt. Andy and Scott were once again Belgians flying the ever-popular Nieuport 11 with the glorious wing gun.
Not to be outdone in game one, Ken was again tonight’s “lead-catcher”. In the first four turns of play, Scott was able to put 12 hits into Ken’s plane. Of those 12 hits, five were pilot chances. One hit found Ken’s pilot for a no effect wound. Ken also suffered a no effect carburetor hit during that barrage which did cause his plane to smoke. Having used all his ammo on turn four, Scott had to evade for a turn in an attempt to reload his gun. On turn six, his wing man Andy swooped in and scored a FF hit on a 100’ side shot, which found Ken’s fuel tank and caused his plane to explode. Andy scored the kill and Ken lost a 1/0 pilot.
This scenario looked all too familiar to Kevan who had been left in this situation in the last game. Although, Kevan did stick it out for four more turns against the Belgians before the Nieuports decided to fly away and outrun his Halberstadt.
Both games took a total of about 3 ½ hours until late in the evening. This is the reason for this late post. The author did have to get to bed to get up for his job.
On a side note, there has been some interest in playing on this Thursday Aug 14th if anyone is available, and not at Gen Con. I will send out an email as a reminder. Otherwise, we will see you on Sunday and Monday night next week. Have a great night!
