Regular Monday night Dawn Patrol came off as planned on May 26, 2014. We had four players in the first game and five in the second. Jim Barber and John Buckland also made brief appearances but didn’t play.

Game 1: July 1918, two big block Fokkers against two SE5as at high altitude. It wasn’t a balanced fight at all. Graham and Chris were in the Fokkers, against Jeff and Scott. Early on, Graham and Chris teamed up on Jeff, shooting him full of holes. He made good his escape early in the game. The Fokkers then turned their attention to Scott, but by this time gun jams were a problem for the Germans. After peppering Scott, Graham jammed his second gun, and Scott put some distance between himself and Chris. But the game wasn’t over. Graham hung back, tailing Scott from 300′ above and behind, while working to clear his jams. Scott worked to climb for the clouds, and escape, all while trying to shake Graham. It took Graham 6 tries before he cleared even one of his guns, but that was enough. On the final chance before Scott would make the clouds, Graham got off a single-gun shot. He hit Scott’s pilot with double 6’s, and inflicted a critical wound. Scott dove away, falling in and out of consciousness, before ripping off his wings in an overdive. His rookie pilot was the 19th kill of Albrecht Hoffer, Graham’s D.VII ace.

Game 2: Back to an early mission, in December 1916. Two French Nieuports (Chris and Andy, who joined us for our second game, minus skype) surprised three German machines; Jeff in an Alb D.II with Scott and Graham in Halberstadt D.IIs. The Frenchmen both fired at Graham, but Andy’s ace missed, and Chris spread his damage around. After that the Germans stuck pretty close together, with the Nieuports darting in for opportunity shots, then darting back out, leaving the Germans with long range shots. Only Jeff and Andy had two guns, so damage per shot was relatively light, but still started to mount. Jeff was quite shot up (4 engine hits, 7 tail hits, 5 right wing hits — but no crits!!). The Nieuports got separated, and the Germans chased Andy off. Not wanting to face 3 on 1, Chris left as well, and the game broke up. All pilots made it safely home.

A good night of games, and things moved very quickly. Even with AP playing without Skype it moved well (because AP was paying attention and is a great player!).

Next game night is on Sunday, June 1. See you there!

    Graham
