KeymasterThe online Dawn Patrol squadron met as planned on Sunday, May 25, 2014.
Game 1: A May 1917 confrontation, with Graham and Jeff McInnes in Sopwith Triplanes against Chris O’Halloran and Jim Barber in Albatrosses. Welcome Jeff and Jim to their inaugural online action! The game lasted for 10 turns, but no one was brought down. The Triplanes got lots of shots off, but with single guns, couldn’t deal a decisive blow. Graham’s Tripe took three engine hits on turn 1, but kept on ticking throughout the game. Barber’s Alb D.II only had a few hits left in one wing when he made good his escape. Graham also broke off after turn 10, with a jammed gun, and the battle broke up. All pilots made it home and landed safely.
Jim had to call it a night after mission 1, but John Buckland took his place. John tried to play the first game, but he failed his evade roll, and had to paint the bedroom with his wife instead.
Game 2: Another early battle, set in October 1916 this time. It wasn’t bad enough that the allies had single guns in game one. This time, all four machines had single guns, and the Allies had wing guns only! Graham and Chris were in a Halb D.II and a Fokker D.II respectively, against John and Jeff in British Nieuport 17s. This time the game lasted for 12 turns! Jeff escaped on turn 7, with a strut hit and only a few hits left in one of his wings. By then both Graham and Chris had jammed their guns on long bursts, but they both eventually cleared them. Chris’ Fokker got jammed in a bank left, and he couldn’t clear it until the 5th try (!!). John was hanging on his tail most of the game, but was only managing a single hit most turns. Eventually Chris had 8 LW hits, and no RW hits, and things were getting pretty tense. On turn 12 Chris finally cleared his aileron jam, and made good his escape. John then broke off, and the game was over. Again, all pilots made it home and landed safely.
I ran an orientation session for Jim and Jeff before the game — took about 45 minutes to get them all set up, and to thoroughly walk through the system. That really helps the first game go more smoothly. The system worked well last night, and folks got the hang of it quickly. Having everyone on Skype makes a huge difference, and keeps typing to a minimum.
