KeymasterWe just completed two pickup games. We had seven players for the first game, and five for the second. We also welcomed a first-time player, Mike Barker. Mike’s another Winnipeg guy coming back to the game after a two-decade layoff. Welcome back, Mike!
Game 1 saw three Belgian SPAD XIIIs (Graham, Carl, Jeff) against a mixed bag of Germans in October, 1918. Scott and Stephen had big block Fokker D.VIIs, Mike had a Fokker 160, and Chris had a Pfalz D.VIII. It was a relatively short game (8 turns), with the Belgians running roughshod over the Germans. Carl put a bullet in Stephen’s Fokker ace (Hans Offdagutz), giving him a light wound. Stephen held on for a while, before making for his own lines and landing safely just behind the front. He survived, and Carl got credit for the kill. Mike, who was altitude-challenged against the more powerful planes (i.e. everyone else), broker off on turn six, having been shot up a fair bit. Scott escaped at the same time. Chris hung on a bit longer. He got hammered by Graham’s experienced Belgian pilot early on (21 hfs in the first three turns), but Graham jammed both guns. Jeff dogged Chris for a while, but couldn’t bring him down, and Chris eventually escaped. The Germans mounted very little offense, were all chased home, and their ace flight leader was wounded. It was a pretty good mission for the Belgians.
Game 2 featured three Sopwith Pups (Steven, Chris and Graham) against an Albatros D.III (Jeff) and a Halberstadt D.II (Scott) in May of 1917. Once again the allies came out on top. Graham shot very poorly, rolling 6’s on his first three shots (all at 100’ range). He finally hit Jeff for 2hfs on turn 4, and put one in the pilot, shooting Jeff’s pilot dead at the stick! After that Scott scrambled to escape, but he couldn’t shake the nimble Pups. Graham and Stephen alternated tailing him, keeping him under cards, which kept Chris closer even when Scott rolled well for numbers. Eventually, on turn 11, Scott cut his engine. He had been pounded pretty hard, all a couple of hits at a time. He also had three critical hits, with nasty cumulative impact. He glided down to a safe landing behind his own lines, with the Pups following him down to be sure. Stephen got kill credit, having been the last to shoot at him (and the one to give him the worst of the critical hits, as well). It was a resounding British victory!
I believe there’s enough interest to have another game on Thursday, June 26. We hope to see you there!
Graham
