KeymasterAt the request of Jeff M we got together a quick online pickup game tonight. It was June of 1918, Western Front fighters. Five players made it to play, and TJ took a quick break from his studies to say “hey”!
It was far from a balanced fight. The Germans got the extra man, and all had Fokker Dr.I’s (at low altitude, to boot). Carl P, Scott and Graham were all in DR’s. The allies were French, and in SPAD VIIs. That was Andy and Jeff, to their disappointment I’m sure.
Turn 1 saw Jeff moving first, then all three Germans. Jeff dove, giving Graham a 200′ top shot and leaving Carl and Scott with 300′ shots. Andy swooped in for a 100′ shot on Carl. The single French vickers gun did more damage than all six spandaus combined! Andy hit for 5 hfs, Graham (with a 21/4 pilot) hit for 4 hfs, and Carl and Scott both missed with 6s. An inauspicious start for the Germans, to say the least. (Two of the four hits to Jeff found his engine, but of course the Germans didn’t know that.)
The next turn saw Carl move first, and then Andy broke off in the opposite direction. Scott couldn’t get close to Andy, so formed up on Carl, and Jeff broke off toward Andy. The only person to get a shot was Graham, falling in onto Jeff’s tail. He hit again for 5 hfs, but jammed a gun. No pilot chances, and the hits were spread out.
On turn 3 Carl and Scott tried to re-engage, but were too far away. Jeff shook Graham’s tailing attempt with a falling leaf maneuver, and there was no shooting. Turns 4 and 5 saw the Germans trying to reel the Frenchmen back in, but they had had their fill, and were heading for the hills. Graham almost succeeding in goading Jeff into taking the bait and shooting at Carl on turn 5, but he (wisely) resisted temptation and made good his escape.
Thus endeth the game and the night! It moved pretty fast. We gathered, set up, and played the game in about an hour (maybe a bit less).
Until next time …
