KeymasterFathers’ Day FITS is in the books. It was one mission with seven players, pretty long and pretty slow moving. But there was lots of excitement mixed in as well!
It was a low altitude battle over the front in September 1918. The Allies were British, with one DH 4 (TJ) and three escorting SE5a’s (Jeff, Carl and Scott). The Germans had two Fokker D.VII’s — Jim in a 185 and Andy in a 160 — and Graham in a Fokker Dr.1. Jim’s D.VII pilot was on his 25th mission.
The Germans scored surprise on the allies. Two pounced on Scott, shooting him up pretty good and causing his engine to smoke. The other German attacked Carl, jamming him in a circle! The shooting continued on turn 2, with no more noticeable impact. Scott dove away and escaped on turn 3, Carl unjammed his controls, and TJ dove down, but the battle stayed up high. That left Carl and Jeff fighting the three Germans on turn 3. On turn 4 most of the fighters stayed high, but Jim dove down to target TJ. He scored a hit and a critical wound on TJ’s observer. On turn 5 all but Andy dove down to rejoin TJ and Jim — Andy was busy trying, successfully, to clear a double gun jam! Jim landed a pilot wound on Jeff, giving him a light wound.
Fire from Jim, on turn 6, jammed Carl into a bank right — his second set of jammed controls for the game! Things got really interesting on turn 7. Carl banked off from the battle. Andy and Jim both lined up shots on Jeff, and the damage gave him smoke to complement his light wound. Graham pummeled TJ, jamming him in a circle. But TJ scored a long range bottom shot on Andy. He scored 4 hits, putting three in the engine, giving Andy a critical hit, and setting his plane on fire!!
On turn 8 Andy dove down, sideslipping to try to extinguish the flames. He rolled a six, and after initially thinking that’s what he wanted, realized it was an explosion instead! TJ kept circling, and Graham and Jim kept shooting him. Jeff and Carl came back for side shots at Graham’s Dr.I, giving him a forward fuselage critical — they shot his pilot’s seat loose (crit #2/2)! (FWIW, I don’t think I’ve ever had that crit before.) On turn 9 Jim continued to press the attack, but with little new effect.
Things got interesting again on turn 10, when Jeff lost consciousness. He overdove, and ripped off his wings. With TJ diving away in the opposite direction Carl made good his escape, but both Graham and Jim stuck with TJ. Jim continued to pepper him, but jammed his last gun on turn 10. Graham was too high to get off a shot, but remained close by and was closing in.
On turn 11 there were only three machines left. TJ with 36 hits in his machine including 4 in the engine, and with a critically wounded observer. But he didn’t know that Jim had no guns left, and that Graham (who was 300′ above him) was down to one gun. Being close to his own lines, TJ cut his engine. Jim and Graham followed him down but held their fire. TJ found a road with a cross wind, but it turned out to be in bad condition. Despite that he landed safely, both crewmen survived, and the observer was not incapacitated!
Jim got credit for both TJ’s DH4 (force down) and Jeff’s SE5a (shot down). Andy went down in flames under TJ’s pilot’s gun. Graham, Carl and Scott all made it back to safe landings at their home fields, despite their critical hits. Jim’s Fokker D.VII pilot, Wolfgang Gurtzbrein (sp?) is now 25/10.
Finally, welcome to Carl Fritz, who was an online rookie tonight. He got an orientation right before game time and did great!

ParticipantEver have one of those missions where you KNOW you should leave, but that ONE last shot is just TOO tempting?!? I mean, when you UNjam two long jammed guns, you HAVE to shoot at least one more time, right??
Yup.
dead.
was the first damage I had taken the whole game too… gotta love this game sometimes!!

KeymasterThanks for the correction Scott. Carl Fritz, welcome! It was late, that’s my only excuse …

MemberYour welcome Andy

BTW what was that pilot’s name I shot down? I gotta record it on the back of my survivors notecard….

KeymasterTJ, Andy only names his pilots when they reach 100 missions or 50 kills. Unfortunately he’s still running out of good names ….

ParticipantTJ although exaggerated, Graham is correct. My pilots have to EARN their names, and the way they do so is by achieving 12 missions or 5 kills. This way I do not get attached to them too early. So my 7th mission Fokker DVII pilot may be logged as ‘unknown’ may he RIP!
On that note, I have discovered that online FitS simulates one aspect of playing live VERY well… the ‘hidden damage’ variance of play – I have always been VERY good at shooting myself down!!June 18, 2014 at 12:56 am #7987TJ Osborne
MemberYea I always liked the open damage
I would much rather roll your damage instead of mine! I don’t get the same vibe from the digital dice as I did from the dramatic regular dice…June 18, 2014 at 1:18 am #7988Chuckmedic
KeymasterI have to differ with you guys. I MUCH prefer hidden damage. Who really cares who tosses the dice on the table or clicks the button? But it really impacts the game if others KNOW you’ve just taken 3 engine hits on a fluke roll from 4 bottom hits. My first priority is to keep my pilots alive, and it’s easier to do that with hidden damage. Plus, it adds to the mystery of the game.
Hidden damage all the way!

MemberThis is true… However I have lost a lot more pilots due to closed damage than open damage… I think the Michigan group plays more chivalrous and when they see those 3 engine hits and you trying to escape, they force you down. But I do like playing both, I just feel more Bada$$ when I roll 3 out of 4 bottom shots as 1’s
