KeymasterWe had a special Dawn Patrol game on Friday evening, welcoming Stephen Eide back to the world of Fight in the Skies! Stephen, who hadn’t played for a couple of decades, completed an orientation session with Graham, then we dove into an early war game.
The game started with two French Nieuport 17s (Graham and Jeff) surprising an Alb D.II (Kevan) and a Fokker E.III (Stephen). Both Nieuports pounced on the flight leader in the Albatros. They both hit, but scored anemic damage. Graham had a single deck gun and Jeff had two guns. In addition to only scoring two hits, Graham jammed his gun on that first turn! (He eventually cleared the jam on turn 4.)
A swirling dogfight ensued, with lots of hits for very little damage. Scott Kolar joined on turn three, rolling allied and flying in with a third Nieuport. The Germans put several shots into Jeff, ultimately scoring a total of 6 hits in his fragile left wing, but doing no serious damage. The allies peppered both Germans, eventually driving Kevan into a steep dive on turn 7. Graham followed, getting a close range top shot. Starting out higher, and with poor dive to begin with, Stephen did a 250′ overdive to keep up, and get a close range shot at Graham. Jeff and Scott followed the battle down, lining up shots on Stephen only to see him rip his wings off in the overdive! A bold, but unsuccessful, move!
After losing his wingman, Kevan stayed for one more parting shot on Jeff, before breaking off combat. With good initiative rolls, he made his escape on turn 9.
Neither Graham nor Scott took any damage in their aircraft. They both shot at Stephen on the turn before he went down, so they diced off, with Graham winning credit for the kill. (His roll of 116 on 35d6 narrowly bested Scott’s roll of 115. Gotta love those dice rolling macros.) The other planes and pilots made it safely back to base, Kevan with a rudder hit.
Stephen suffered some pretty harsh luck on his first mission back to the game. He rolled a pretty S**T plane, got surprised on turn 1, routinely moved first, and ultimately ripped his wings off in an overdive. Hopefully he’ll come back for another game?!? His luck can only improve.
Next scheduled gaming is for Sunday night, June 15th (Fathers’ Day).
