Today’s mission was set in May 1918, with four German fighters (Carl P and Scott K in Fokker Dr.Is, Graham in a Fokker D.VI and Chris O in a Fokker D.VII 160) against four French SPAD XIIIs (Jim B, Andy P, Carl F and John B). All of the the French SPADs had rookie pilots (their 4 for 4 pilots). The Frenchmen had a 1,000’ height advantage, and they dove into the scrum on turn one. There were several longer range shots, and no hits for more than 4 hit factors of damage. The Germans dished out marginally more damage.

The two sides traded shots through turn 4, with no one dealing a decisive blow. Jim B dove away on turn 5, leaving Carl F to take a triple-team from the Germans, but they couldn’t bring him down. Things got more interesting on turn 6. Carl P put a bullet in John B’s pilot, critically wounding him. In the same turn, Andy P hit Graham’s pilot, also scoring a critical wound. Neither wounded pilot would make it down alive. Carl F and Andy broke off combat on the second turn following the pilot hits, and that was the end of the game.

Three of the Germans were scoring the mission for the Ace of Ace competition. That worked out great for Carl P (+99), ok for Scott (+41), but not so good for Graham (-35). At least we can score four missions and only count the best three!

Next game is on Monday, August 4.

    Graham
