The mission tonight was deja vu all over again. The Germans were busting a British balloon in November of 1918. This time it was Scott (D.VII 185), Carl F (SSW D.IV) and Chris (Pfalz D.XII) on the attack, with three Snipes (Ken, Jeff, Graham) defending the gas bag.

Scott dove in to attack the balloon on the first turn, on his own. He hit it 5 times, and sent it up in flames for a quick kill. The other two huns went for Ken’s Snipe, and shot him up. The kept the pressure on Ken, who rolled his characteristically awful initiative numbers. After a few turns Ken dove away and made good his escape, with 9 hits in one wing. He never managed to get off a shot. He also failed his 95% landing roll, and wrecked his aircraft on his home field. Thankfully the pilot walked away from the crash.

Scott struggled with gun troubles the entire game, and wasn’t a big factor after the first turn. Graham managed to stick on Carl’s tail for four consecutive turns, but he jammed a gun along the way, and missed on the final burst he got off, before Carl finally shook him. That last shot could have been enough had it hit, but Carl made good his escape. Graham then tailed Chris for several turns, until Chris turned the tables. But the Pfalz couldn’t keep up with the Snipe, and Graham quickly put distance between the two aircraft. Seeing himself falling behind, Chris headed for home.

Not sure why I haven’t mentioned Jeff? He was below the action for a bit of the fight, and got back into the mix with Graham and Chris near the end. Then his PC spontaneously rebooted! We had no idea where he’d gone, so we eventually had to take his AC off. He came back after a while, but had missed three turns already, and was off the board.

So just the one balloon kill, credited to Scott. Scott was scoring, and did fairly well (+55) despite scoring little damage. All three Snipes were scoring — none of them very well! Graham had +45, Jeff +33 and Ken -20 … for his third consecutive negative point total on a scoring mission.

    Next game is Monday night.
    Graham
