Scott Kolar
ParticipantWe played two games this Thursday evening for an off night of some exciting Dawn Patrol action.
Game one was June of 1917. For the Allies it was Jeff McInnes and Scott Kolar as French flying Nieuport 17’s. Jeff had 2 guns and Scott had one wing gun. For the Germans it was Carl Priest flying a DFW C5 two seater with his wingmen Andy Priest and John Buckland in Albatros DIII’s.
The Germans had a surprise attack in turn one, and surprise they did. John and Andy shot at Jeff and Carl shot at Scott. Carl missed his shot on both Scott and Jeff with Carl’s pilot shooting at Scott’s bottom and Carl’s obs shooting at Jeff. Meanwhile, Andy and John both hit Jeff and caused a nasty engine crit 2/2. Jeff had a motor mount hit and was limited to 60 mph. He did go up to 80 mph on one turn to get away and survived the percentage roll. Scott was able to keep the Germans busy and let his wingman escape combat. Scott was only able to get 3 hits out of 10 that hit ( two to Carl and one for Andy). Also, Carl’s obs jammed his gun on turn three leaving him with just his front gun. Running out of ammo, Scott was able to fly straight and successfully reload his gun. But, with three Germans on his tail he was not sticking around and he was able to outrun them and make good his escape. Jeff’s pilot made it back and survived the landing.
Game two took place in September of 1918. John Buckland was not able to play the second game, so it was two on two. Andy Priest and Scott Kolar were British Camel 140’s against Carl Priest and Jeff McInnes in Fokker DVII’s.
Andy moved first setting the Germans up for long-range shots. Carl took the bait and went for the deadly 400’ tail shot. Scott, being the good wingman that he is, came over to help Andy and took a 50’ bottom shot on Carl. Jeff flew in last to take the 100’ bottom shot on Scott. Scott rolled max damage and hit Carl for 8 hits. Jeff was able to hit Scott for 5 from the bottom in that turn. One of Jeff’s slugs found Scott’s pilot, causing a LW. Two of Scott’s bullets caused a couple of critical hits to Carl’s plane that cut his performance substantially. He received an Interrupter gear hit in the engine along with an elevator cable hit in the forward fuselage. No loops or fancy maneuvers, no climbing or nose up attacks possible and dive cut to 1000’ per turn. He also was not able to shoot his gun for fear of shooting off his own propeller. Carl was able to make good his escape in the next two turns as Andy decided to help his wingman and tailed Jeff who was tailing Scott. Jeff was unable to get more than a 300’ tail shot on Scott. Andy was able to keep up with Jeff and dealt some additional damage. Scott eventually broke Jeff’s tail.
In turn 4, Scott was able to put another 4 hits into Jeff’s bottom, with Andy still hot on Jeff’s tail. Upon rolling consciousness for turn 5, Scott’s pilot went unconscious and began to fall. Jeff hung around a bit to see what Scott’s outcome would be. Seeing that it was not going to be good, he was able to evade Andy and fly away. Scott’s pilot never regained consciousness and fell to his death from 4600 feet. Jeff’s pilot was awarded with the kill. His pilot’s record is now 7-4. He is a killer!
All pilots scoring missions tonight verified their scores with their wingman and submitted their scores to Graham via email.
Next game night is Sunday evening, September 21st at 7pm. Hope to see you there.
