ParticipantWell good evening everyone,
The Minnesota “Ghost” Jasta Squadron got in a live game of FITS this evening after our poker game. We played at Carl Priest’s house. Andy Priest was in town for a few days with his new bride Lisa and they are visiting relatives here in MN before heading back to California. Joining us at the table tonight was Carl’s father, Jim Priest. It was a real treat to meet Carl’s dad and get in a fun evening of cards and flying.
This was Jim’s first Dawn Patrol game. He flew as an observer with his grandson Andy in a DFW 2 seater. Carl flew escort in an Albatros DIII. The fight took place in September of 1917 with the German Priests taking on John B and Scott in British Sopwith Pups.
The British had the upper hand when it came to speed, but the Germans outgunned us 2 to 1. Most of the shots taken by the British were from long range and with one gun to their name you can imagine they were not dishing out much damage. The Pups were able to easily fly in, shoot, and fly away. This cat and mouse play went on for 9 turns. One highlight of the game was during turn 5. Scott had a 450 foot tail shot on Andy and Jim. After successfully rolling a one to hit, he was able to put two HFs into Andy’s plane. He announced that they should both be center wings and sure as I am sitting here typing this out, they were both center wing hits. No really, I am not making this up so quit your jeering!
However, both pilot chances were misses and Andy continued to fly along like nothing happened. To share a quote from Mr. Buckland at the table tonight said it best, ” Scott is pretty easy to read. You can get inside his head, you just don’t want to stay too long!”Scott had to leave to be able to pick up his daughters who had returned from their band performance. They took second place in their competition. Yay!!!! But, i wish they could say the same about their father.
Daddy Warbucks
got cocky and decided because he had to leave and the fact that he had never tried it before, he would take his first ever HO shot on Carl, hoping for a lucky shot. Now mind you, Scott was severely outclassed here, which is usually the case. One, Carl had 2 guns, Scott had one. Two, Carl has been playing this game forever, Scott is still in his infancy. Three, Carl warned Scott that he shouldn’t do it, Scott did not listen. And last but not least, Carl has a brain. Scott does not. Carl put eight HF’s into Scott’s plane with 5 of them in the engine, Scott got off one shot into Carl’s LW.. Also, Andy and Jim flew in for the 200 foot side shot. Both Andy and Jim hit, with Jim hitting the engine of Scott’s plane and stealing Carl’s kill! Talk about your family rivalry. You can imagine how this ended with nine hits to the engine. Scott’s engine conked out, caught fire and exploded. Death, destruction and carnage rained down upon the land. And so Jim Priest got his first kill, Scott got to experience what happens to you when you are foolish and don’t listen, and Andy, Carl and John got to shake their heads in disbelief and add another chapter into Scott’s “I told you not to do that” book. I could have easily flown off like John did and the game would have been over, but then you wouldn’t have anything to read and I am always thinking of others.Looking forward to our next live Minnesota game night in two weeks. No matter what, it is always a BLAST! Literally. CYA!
