KeymasterHello. I am getting back into Dawn Patrol after a lengthy hiatus; went searching online for a copy after feeling a bit nostalgic, and bought one on impulse. I have a dedicated group of comrades-in-arms who meet pretty much every week, and I am expanding their horizons when it comes to RPGs. We started off with D&D, tried some Systems Failure, Aliens, Warhammer Ancient Battles…now I’d like to see how they take to Dawn Patrol.
First off, a big thankyou to all involved here; looks like an amazing resource, and when I get a moment I plan to give it a good once-over. A couple quick questions…
1). Any other Canucks out there?
2). Aerodrome…what is this? Your FITS membership seems like a great idea, but does it work up here, or is it just ‘in-house?’
2-b). Along those lines, any recommended links or other resources? Especially as it concerns more board! As soon as i opened the game, i remember having always planned to expand the board…
Thx in advance for your time and replies!July 4, 2011 at 10:08 pm #7684Mark Stevenson
MemberZen,
Welcome back to the game! I hope your local group enjoys the game. Whether or not they do, there is always Virtual Dawn Patrol too! The software is free to load, and we are currently running two games simultaneously, with a third game planned to start soon (which I will be running). These games are run in email mode. Everyone makes their move at their own convenience (with a reasonable time limit, of course), then sends the move out in an email to the rest of the players. The GM controls dice rolls for gun jams, to hit, initiative, etc. A great part of the game system is the expanded map that is available too…
Instructions are available elsewhere on the site to download the game system (Vassal) and Dawn Patrol module. Give it a try, and consider getting involved in the email games that are starting up in the future (check out the VDP Email Game forum).
Welcome back!

Thx in advance for your time and replies!1)Yes Kevan is up in the Great White North (Sorry couldn’t resist) He has a group up there as well. I think Dan or Andrew can reach him offline for you.
2)Membership entitles you to alot. Theoretically you get a quarterly Magazine called the Aerodrome. (Usually its two a year) Access to this website which includes archived Aerodromes, Expanded counters and New rules encompassing Large planes, New Bombing charts and a support sytem for when you have rule questions. There are a few member supplied supplements that include extra maps, though I am not sure they are archived here. I am sure that asking will get you an email with a map attachment:) Most of us have a sewing board that we have spent alot of time coloring in. Not something you can fax but alot of fun at conventions. And there are the tournaments. The Indy squadron sponsers one in April, The Society sponsers a spring tourney in April (Usually the Most fun), The Arizona guys have one in July and Gen-Con is in August. The Game Designer Mike Carr is having alot more conventions lately where Dawn Patrol is a featured game. And speaking of Mr Carr, he is more than happy to Sign your rules at any convention where you might meet him.
All in all its worth the money.

KeymasterWell, that seemed to go okay. Realized that not playing in over a decade had accrued a little rust, but we muddled through it somehow! The guys seemed to enjoy themselves, especially when more of them died landing their planes than in combat LOL …
I had laid out a recon/fighter intercept scenario, but it got blindsided by having too many cloud banks for the Brits to disappear into  Does anyone have advice on this, or say a link to the relevant Forum topic? Would be appreciated very much.
When I have a moment to catch my breath, I am going to look into VDP for sure, if nothing else than to brush up on the rules and be able to organize a decent campaign for my crew. We’re hilt-deep in an epic D&D campaign, and I am aiming to buffalo them into a Deadlands campaign as well… but from their reaction last nite, Dawn Patrol will probably make a reappearance, at least on “one-off” nites.
Thx for the welcome!

ParticipantClouds happen

If you look at it from the underdog point of view, those were life saving clouds.

KeymasterJust received my subscription to Aerodrome, leafing thru issue #111 right now…i have to say it gives a great feel for the camaraderie of the FITS gang. i am off to Australia for training with NORFORCE for a few weeks, but when i return i am looking to diving into a few more games, whether with my dungeoncrawlers or online with you guys. Cautiously optomistic that we can get a squadron going up here! As an aside, in issue #111 there was talk of ‘game reports’ by Mike Carr…anyone have one posted, or a relevant link? i would enjoy a few ‘After Action Reports’ from some of the veterans here, for sure!
